Several Syrian children took part in a concert featuring Thirteen Strings and soprano Miriam Khalil. It was billed as a concert for peace.
The concert, held at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, was an opportunity to recognize and include Syrian refugee families who have settled in Ottawa during the past year.
The concert included well-known works by Mozart, Vaughan Williams and Samuel Barber and a piece composed just for the event. This special piece was meant to appeal across cultures and resonate with the Syrian families in attendance.
It is based on an 800-year-old poem — Children of Adam — by the Persian medieval poet Saadi.
